Living in Almaty
Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan, a fast-developing nation in the centre of Asia. The size of Western Europe, Kazakhstan has many varied landscapes, but is best known for the steppe, the traditional homeland of the nomadic Kazakhs. Almay is situated on the northern slopes of the Tien Shan mountains, a north-western spur of the Himalayas. For lovers of winter sports, it is 40 minutes from the city centre to the nearest ski slopes, and boasts the highest ice rink in the world. In summer, the tree-lined city centre streets with their pavement cafes have an almost European feel. With many shopping malls and even a cinema showing films in English, Almaty is a pleasant and interesting place to live.
